Importance of Your Air Conditioner Filter

Do you really know what you and are family are breathing in on a daily basis?  The EPA recently placed indoor air pollution in the top highest environmental risks regarding public health.  Inside the average home, the air is full of much more than just dust or dirt.  There are a number of pollutants that most people never think about such as: dust mites, pollen, dander, mold, bacteria, smoke, and much more.  While this is inherently unhealthy, it is even worst for people that already have allergies.  This is even worse in houses that do not regularly change their air conditioning filters.

Residential homes are designed to keep cooled air inside and the hot weather outside.  This means that all of the mold and pollutants that get inside will stay inside.  Most people spend almost 90% of their day inside.  This is unfortunate because inside air is 2 to 5 times as polluted as the air outside.  With the increased attention focused on indoor pollution air conditioning filters are improving at an incredible rate.

Once an air conditioning filter is dirty and clogged, it cannot continue to clean and filter your air.  It also leads to poor air circulation which means that your air conditioning unit has to work harder and longer to continue to cool your home.  When this happens your electric bill will increase and the potential for your air conditioner to break down increases exponentially.

To prevent this type of situation from arising, families need to change their air conditioning filter regularly.  Every house has a different schedule, based on a multitude of variables, that needs to be followed.  These variables include: the size of the house, the type of air filter, how often the air conditioner is used, how dirty the air in the house is, if you have pets, if people smoke inside, what trees and plants are around the house, and many others.

When determining how often you need to replace your air conditioning filter, it is important to identify the point where it is most cost-efficient as well as effective at eliminating indoor air pollution.  If you do not change it often enough, you will have a house with high levels of indoor pollution as well as hard on your air conditioner.  If you replace it too often, you will be spending more on air conditioning filters than it would take to replace your entire system.

Changing your air conditioning filter is an important part of your houses maintenance.  Proper maintenance is vital to making your air conditioner run efficiently as well as creating a healthy place to live for you and your family.
