What Thickness Filter Should I Use?
What Thickness Filter Should I Use?
One of our most common questions here at Quality Furnace Filters is also one of the most important. What thickness filter should you buy for your furnace? You will find that many filters with the dimensions that you need come in a variety of thicknesses and this can leave you confused. However, choosing the right thickness is important to ensuring that you capture the most dust and dirt and also to keeping your furnace running efficiently. So how do you know what size to use?
The answer is actually quite simple. You want to select the thickest filter that will fit inside your unit. If you go to measure your unit and it will hold a four inch filter then that is the size you want to buy. If it will only hold a two inch filter then go with that size. The key is to always have the thickest filter inside your unit that will fit. There are a couple of benefits to doing this.
When you select a thicker filter it will last longer than a thinner one. While you should still change your filter regularly, you want to get the most use out of each filter that you possibly can. The bigger the filter, the longer it will last because it will be able to do more. The larger surface area on that thicker filter will capture more dust and dirt than a thinner model so that you can go just a little longer in between changing than you might with a smaller filter.
A thicker filter also works to provide more energy efficiency. The larger area of the filter means that there is less pressure drop from the filter. In the end having a more energy efficient furnace and filter will save you money on heating and cooling costs.
Even though you do want the thickest filter possible, it is important that you not stack more than one filter unless your unit is designed for a pre-filter. If you choose to stack filters you will see your air flow drop that is not safe. Your unit’s blower will be overworked and the amount of energy that is consumed will continue to rise. You may even find that you aren’t getting enough air circulation to heat or cool your home. Avoid these problems by only placing one filter at the maximum thickness inside the unit.
