If you need to drill a hole in concrete you will need a hammer drill in order to do it. The best option in this regard is to get a rotary hammer drill since these also offer the advantage of allowing you to use them as a jackhammer.
The following is our list of the top 5 rotary hammer drills on the market so that you can find the best one for your needs.
Bosch RH328VC 1-1/8-Inch SDS Rotary Hammer Review
Pros:
- Lots of Power
- Comfortable Grip
- Easy to Adjust
Cons:
- Nothing Worth Mentioning
Review
This was easily the best hammer drill that we tested, it has more than enough power allowing it to go through concrete with incredible ease. It works great as both a drill and as a hammer, the chisels are excellent.
The feature that sets this hammer drill apart is the grip which is very comfortable, after you have used the Bosch RH328VC you will never want to go back to another hammer drill.
We also liked how light this tool was which makes it easy to use in awkward positions. Bosch claims that there is no other hammer drill that can match the power to weight ratio of the RH328VC and we have no reason to doubt them. This drill is perfect for things like slab repairs or drilling into anything concrete, any sort of hard surfaces, wood is just easy so anything wood as well.
This is the point of the review where we would normally talk about any criticisms that we have but in truth we couldn’t find any.
Therefore all we will say is that this is the best hammer drill that we tested and we highly recommend it to anybody although it might be a little more expensive than the average do it yourselfer is prepared to pay.
DEWALT D25263K D-Handle Rotary Hammer with Shocks
Pros:
- Multi Function
- Lightweight
- Good Power
Cons:
- Durability May be An Issue
Review
One of the things that we liked about the Dewalt was that it allowed for several different functions, not only can you use it as a hammer drill but it can also be used for normal drilling and as a jack hammer like they do in DrillPresser.com. It accepts bits for all of these which is another nice feature as some other hammer drills require a separate chuck for normal drill bits.
The other thing that we liked about this tool was that it is very light compared to most other hammer drills which is really helpful when you are working in awkward positions like overhead.
The power is pretty good although not as good as some other hammer drills in its price range like the Bosch 11255SVR
The only real concern that we have about the Dewalt is that in order to keep the weight down they may have had to sacrifice on the durability as it does not feel as solidly built as some other hammer drills.
We really liked this tool and recommend it particularly for the do it yourselfer who needs a good quality hammer drill at a reasonable price. The durability issues may be a concern for a professional user but for use around the house it is more than adequate.
Makita HR2475X2 1-Inch Rotary Hammer
Pros:
- Comfortable to Use
- Good Power
- Easy to Change Bits
Cons:
- Gets Really Hot
Review
Of all the hammer drills that we tried the Makita HR2475X2 was probably the most comfortable to use. It is fairly lightweight and the handle is well designed so that it is easy to hold on to. It also includes a feature that allows the drill to idle until you actually start to hammer with it so there is far less vibration while you are holding it.
The bits were easy to change which we really liked although again this one only accepts SDS bits. The tool is not too heavy but it is still very solidly built. There is plenty of power although not as much as we seemed to have with the Bosch.
The only real criticism that we had about the Makita was that it got really hot so you will want to make sure that you have a good pair of gloves when you use it.
The Makita HR2475X2 is a hammer drill that we are happy to recommend to anybody who will be planning to use their drill a lot. It is probably a little on the pricey side for the home user but for the professional who will be getting a lot of use out of it this tool is ideal.
Bosch 11255VSR BULLDOG Xtreme 1-Inch SDS-plus D-Handle Rotary Hammer
Pros:
- Lots of Power
- Easy to Change Bits
- Handle and Depth Gauge are Easy to Adjust
Cons:
- Only Takes SDS Bits
Review
The Bosch 11255VSR Bulldog is an outstanding hammer drill with lots of power so that it can handle any job that you will likely encounter.
One of the things that we really liked was how easy it is to change the bits, not only are they easy to change but they stay firmly in place while using the tool, something that we can’t say about a lot of other hammer drills that we have tried.
We also liked the fact that the handle and depth gauge were easy to adjust, particularly the handle, on most other hammer drills you have to practically take the thing apart to adjust the handle.
There is not really much that we can complain about with this tool, the only minor quibble is that it only accepts SDS bits although Bosch does allow you to purchase another chuck that will accept regular bits.
Overall we think this is the best hammer drill on the market and we highly recommend it to anybody who needs one.
All are the best names in tools as well. So if you think I’ve left a “must see” drill out of the top 5, please leave a comment below and let me know!
